Got an SC542 error on an older Ricoh Aficio copier — an Aficio MP C6000, MP C7500, or similar machine from that generation? SC542 is a fusing thermistor error: the machine isn't getting a valid temperature reading from the fuser, so it shuts down to protect itself. This guide covers the Aficio-era diagnosis, the correct service mode procedures for these older panels, and how to reset the code once the cause is fixed.

Working on a newer machine? If your copier is from the MP or IM series rather than the Aficio line, see our guide to SC541–SC545, SC547 & SC549 fuser thermistor errors instead — the codes are related but the procedures differ.

Understanding the SC542 Error: What It Means

The fusing unit uses thermistors to monitor roller temperature. SC542 fires when the reading from the fusing thermistor is out of range — either the fuser never reached the expected temperature, or the sensor itself isn't reporting correctly. On the Aficio series, the thermistor in question sits on top of the fuser above the hot roller.

One important quirk: fuser error codes like SC542 are latched. Even after you fix the actual cause, the code stays on screen until it's manually reset in SP mode — a simple power cycle won't clear it. That's why the reset procedure below matters.

Common Causes of SC542 on Aficio Machines

  • Dirty or toner-contaminated thermistor. The most common and cheapest fix — the sensor face gets coated and can no longer read temperature accurately.
  • Thermistor out of position. If it's not seated correctly against the hot roller, readings drift out of range.
  • Failed thermistor or temperature sensor. On the Aficio MP C6000 family, the relevant genuine Ricoh parts are AW10 0107 (thermistor), AW10 0110 (thermistor), and AW10 0114 (upper temperature sensor). Verify part numbers against the service manual for your exact model before ordering.
  • Fusing lamp or fusing unit wear. If the fuser genuinely isn't heating, the thermistor is reporting a real problem — replacing the sensor won't help.
  • Loose or damaged connectors between the fusing unit and the machine.

Step-by-Step Fix for SC542

  1. Power off and let the fuser cool completely. Fuser components run hot enough to burn you.
  2. Inspect the thermistor on top of the fuser above the hot roller. Check that it's clean and seated correctly against the roller.
  3. Clean it gently with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. No liquids, no abrasives.
  4. Check the fusing unit connectors — reseat the fuser and confirm nothing is loose or damaged.
  5. Replace the thermistor if cleaning and reseating don't resolve it (see part numbers above).
  6. Reset the latched code in SP mode — procedure below. The error will not clear on its own even after the repair.

Entering SP Mode on Aficio-Series Machines

These older panels use a different entry procedure than current MP/IM models (which use Service Mode code 806182):

  1. Press the Clear Modes key (yellow key).
  2. On the keypad, press 1, 0, 7 in sequence.
  3. Hold down the Clear/Stop key (red key) for more than 3 seconds.
  4. The SP menu appears — select Copy SP (or System SP, depending on model and installed options).

If "Copy SP" doesn't appear on the SP screen: some Aficio models require Factory Service Mode instead — press Clear, then 1, 4, 3, then the Cancel button twice, and System SP will be available. Note that Factory Service Mode (143) and standard Service Mode are two different modes — don't mix up their procedures.

Resetting the SC542 Code

  1. In SP mode, navigate to SP 5-810 (SC reset) and execute it.
  2. Exit SP mode.
  3. Cycle the main power off, wait 10 seconds, and power back on.

If the code returns immediately after a reset, the underlying cause hasn't been fixed — go back to the thermistor and fuser checks above rather than resetting repeatedly. Repeatedly clearing a fuser error without fixing the cause risks real damage.

When to Call a Professional Ricoh Technician

Contact a qualified technician if the error returns after cleaning and resetting, if the fuser isn't heating at all, or if you're not comfortable working in SP mode — incorrect changes in service modes can create additional faults. Always follow the official Ricoh service manual for your specific model.

Is It Worth Repairing, or Time to Replace?

Here's the honest read: the Aficio line is well over a decade old. A thermistor cleaning costs nothing and is always worth trying. But if you're into replacing thermistors, sensors, or the fusing unit on an Aficio-era machine, genuine parts are getting scarce, and technician labor at around $350 per hour including diagnostic time often exceeds what the machine is worth. At that point, a low-meter machine from a newer generation is usually the smarter spend than keeping an Aficio alive.

Not sure which way to go? Text us a photo of your error screen and tell us your model — we'll give you an honest read on whether it's worth fixing, no obligation.
