It's a smart question to ask before buying any used copier: will I still be able to get toner and parts for this machine in a few years? A great deal on a copier isn't a deal at all if it becomes unserviceable. Here's how to make sure the machine you buy stays supportable — and why some platforms are far safer bets than others.
A copier's age matters less than its support. A well-supported five- or eight-year-old commercial machine with plentiful toner and parts is a safer buy than a newer model from a line that's already being abandoned. What you're really checking is: are consumables and service parts still readily available, and will they be for the life you expect from the machine?
This is the biggest reason we focus on Ricoh (including its Savin and Lanier equivalents): it's one of the most widely serviced platforms in the industry, with long parts and toner availability across a standardized family of machines. Buy into a well-supported platform and the "will I be able to service it?" worry largely disappears. (More in which copier brands hold their value.)
"Discontinued" doesn't mean "unsupportable." Manufacturers stop making a model long before they stop supporting it — toner and parts for popular commercial copiers typically remain available for many years after the model is retired. A discontinued but widely-sold Ricoh can be an excellent, well-supported value. The models to avoid are the obscure ones that never sold in volume, where parts dried up quickly.
The simplest protection is buying from a dealer who stocks toner and services what they sell. We only stock machines we can support — with genuine toner and service available — so you're never left holding an orphaned unit. That's part of what "low-meter and supported" really means.
Before buying a used or older copier, confirm toner, parts, and service are still readily available — and favor a widely supported platform so they stay that way. Do that and a well-chosen used machine will run reliably for years. Want a copier we can keep supplied and serviced? Browse our used Ricoh copiers or call 714-696-6082.
