Ricoh Smart Operation Panel Stuck, Frozen, or Blank? Here's the Fix

by Copier Guru on June 21, 2026

If your Ricoh copier's touchscreen Smart Operation Panel is stuck on a blue "sunrise" splash screen, frozen on an Android "Please wait" loading screen, flickering between the two, or showing a blank/black screen even though the machine itself is powered on and running, this is a known issue with the panel hardware (Ricoh refers to this panel as the "Cheetah" or "Griffin" panel internally) rather than a problem with the print engine itself.

Symptoms This Covers

  • Panel displays only the blue sunrise screen and never progresses
  • Panel is stuck on the Android "Please wait..." spinner
  • Panel flickers back and forth between the sunrise screen and the loading screen
  • Apps or icons are missing from the home screen
  • Panel is completely blank/black, but the power LED is lit and you can hear the machine's engine running normally

Important distinction: a blank panel with the engine running and power LED lit is different from the other symptoms above. According to Ricoh's official troubleshooting bulletin, that specific combination, along with a "mount err" message appearing if you're able to get into recovery mode, indicates the panel's internal board has failed and needs replacement β€” the recovery steps below won't fix it.

For the Recoverable Symptoms (Sunrise Screen, Stuck Loading, Flickering, Missing Apps)

Ricoh's official recovery procedure is software-level, not a hardware swap, and works in the majority of cases. The general process:

  1. Power off the machine, then enter the panel's recovery mode using the specific button-hold sequence for your panel (this involves holding combinations of small panel buttons during power-on β€” the exact sequence is in the official bulletin and varies slightly by how the screen settings were last configured)
  2. Run the Android system update from recovery mode
  3. If the update stalls for more than 5 minutes, perform a factory reset (wipe data) instead, then retry the update
  4. Once the update completes, enter the panel's advanced SP mode and reinstall the interface app
  5. Restart the panel β€” you may briefly see error messages and the language switch to Japanese after a factory reset; this is expected and resolves itself after one more restart
  6. Reload the remaining apps and reset the screen startup mode to normal

Ricoh's bulletin notes two specific failure points that mean the panel's main board genuinely needs replacing rather than continuing to retry the recovery: if the update or factory-reset step itself stalls for more than 5 minutes on the very first attempt with no recovery-mode error, or if the interface app fails to install a second time after you've already done a full factory reset.

This whole procedure involves Android-level system recovery on the panel itself, not the print engine, so it's lower-risk than fuser or high-voltage repairs β€” but it still requires getting into a service-level recovery menu, which isn't something most office staff have done before. If you're not comfortable attempting this yourself, or you've already tried and hit one of the two non-recoverable conditions above, give us a call.
