Choose between a used Ricoh MP and IM by comparing specific models, condition and the complete price. An older MP may meet your office's needs at a lower equipment cost. An IM may be worth the difference when its verified features or software compatibility improve your workflow. Neither label is a substitute for checking the actual machine.
MP is the older black-and-white family; IM is the newer-generation black-and-white family. For example, compare the MP 5055 with the IM 5000, or the MP 6055 with the IM 6000. These models print in black and white; scanning capabilities should be checked separately.
MP C is the older color family; IM C is the newer-generation color family. The C identifies the color line. Compare the MP C3004ex with the IM C3000, for example. Both color families can also print black-and-white documents.

IM and IM C are the newer-generation families compared with MP and MP C. There are different model generations within the IM families, so compare the complete model number and suffix as well. The family name alone does not guarantee the same paper sizes, feeder, fax or finishing equipment.

These are comparisons of current listings, not a claim that used MP machines always cost a particular percentage less. Confirm matching accessories and condition before interpreting the difference as a saving.
Consider an MP when it meets your paper-size, output and scanning needs and leaves room in the budget for supplies and maintenance. Test your print and scan workflows before buying, and confirm that appropriate drivers, firmware and local service are available for that exact model.
An office producing familiar document types may get more value from a well-configured MP than from paying for functions it will not use. The conclusion depends on the available machine and quote, not simply on its age.
Consider an IM when its confirmed features make a difference to everyday work: the available feeder, control panel, required scanning workflow or supported software. Ricoh's IM platforms include models with Always Current Technology, but capabilities, update eligibility and optional applications must be verified by model and firmware.

Do not assume interchangeability between MP and IM, or even between related models. Verify the exact supply and accessory part numbers before carrying anything over from an old machine.
A fixed retirement date or remaining page count cannot be promised from the model family alone. Condition, workload, upkeep and support availability determine the useful life of the specific copier. Evaluate those factors alongside purchase price.
