Ricoh SC101–SC195 Scanner Error Codes Explained

by Copier Guru on June 21, 2026

The SC101 through SC195 codes all relate to the scanner subsystem — the part of the copier that reads your original document, not the part that prints. Sourced from Ricoh's official service manual.

Main Scanner Carriage Errors (SC101, SC102, SC120, SC121, SC141, SC142, SC144)

  • SC101-01: The white level reading from the scanner carriage didn't reach the expected threshold when scanning the white guide plate
  • SC101-02 / SC102-00: Related LED illumination adjustment failures during the same white-level calibration process
  • SC120-00 / SC121-00: The scanner carriage's home position sensor failed to switch on or off correctly during startup, an automatic adjustment, or a scan
  • SC141-00 / SC142-00: The black or white level couldn't be calibrated to the correct target during the scanner's automatic gain control routine
  • SC144-00: The main board can't detect or communicate with the scanner carriage at all

Common causes across this whole group: condensation inside the scanner unit, a loose or disconnected connector between the scanner carriage and the main board, a dirty or incorrectly seated white reference plate/seal, or the scanner carriage itself failing.

What to check first: the white guide plate or white roller (behind the exposure glass and inside the document feeder) gets dirty over time and is the single most common cause in this group. Gently cleaning it with a soft, lint-free cloth resolves a meaningful share of these before anything needs to be opened up further.

Duplex ("Side 2") Scanning Errors (SC151, SC152, SC154, SC161-02)

These all relate specifically to the second CIS (contact image sensor) used for single-pass duplex scanning in the document feeder — the sensor that reads the back side of a page without flipping it:

  • SC151-00: Black level reading from the Side 2 sensor is out of range
  • SC152-00: White level (shading) reading from the Side 2 sensor is out of range
  • SC154-00: Internal self-check values read from the Side 2 sensor don't match what's expected
  • SC161-02: Self-diagnostic error detected before a Side 2 scan even starts

Causes are almost always the same across this group: a loose connector between the document feeder's main board and the Side 2 CIS sensor, or the sensor/board itself failing.

Board-Level and Administrative Codes

  • SC161-20: A DRAM initialization failure on the main controller board (BICU) during startup or wake from energy-saving mode — this points to the board itself or its memory, not the scanner mechanism
  • SC195-00: The machine's stored serial number doesn't match its product identification code. This one isn't a hardware fault at all — it's resolved by simply re-entering the correct machine serial number

General Troubleshooting Order

  1. Power the machine off and back on — several of these clear on their own after a restart
  2. Clean the white guide plate/roller behind the exposure glass and in the document feeder
  3. Reconnect the relevant internal connector (varies by code, but it's always between the scanner/CIS and the main or document feeder board)
  4. If it persists, the carriage, CIS sensor, or board itself likely needs replacement

Is It Worth Repairing, or Time to Replace?

Most of these clear with a cleaning or a reconnected cable, so this group is rarely a big-ticket repair. The exception is if it traces back to the scanner carriage assembly or the controller board itself — those parts plus diagnostic time at a typical shop labor rate of around $350 per hour can add up, especially on a machine that's already several years old and likely due for other wear-part replacements soon anyway.

Most of this group involves opening the scanner housing or document feeder, which isn't something most office staff have done before. If cleaning and a restart don't clear it, give us a call.
