Ricoh SC360 and SC361 TD Sensor Errors Explained

by Copier Guru on June 21, 2026

SC360 and SC361 are both toner density (TD) sensor errors on Ricoh color copiers — one step earlier in severity than the SC362 "lower limit" error covered elsewhere on our site. Sourced from Ricoh's official service manual.

The Color Rule (Same as SC362)

  • -01 = Black (K)
  • -02 = Cyan (C)
  • -03 = Magenta (M)
  • -04 = Yellow (Y)

SC360: TD Sensor Adjustment Error

This fires when the sensor's "Mu count" reading is either above the threshold that indicates no developer present, or stays outside the upper/lower target range for three readings in a row.

SC361: TD Sensor Output Error — Upper Limit

This fires when the sensor's output voltage exceeds the upper-limit error threshold continuously, past the occurrence threshold count.

Common Causes for Both

  • TD sensor connector loose or disconnected
  • Development unit installed incorrectly, or a gear has come loose
  • Developer doesn't match the original specification (if it was recently topped up or replaced)
  • TD sensor itself has failed
  • Harness to the TD sensor damaged or disconnected

What a Technician Checks, in Order

  1. Power the machine off and back on first — if the error doesn't reoccur, it may have been a one-off glitch
  2. Confirm all connectors related to the TD sensor for that color are securely seated
  3. Inspect the development unit for a loose gear, incorrect installation, or developer that isn't the original specified type
  4. Inspect the TD sensor itself for damage
  5. Check the harness running to the TD sensor
  6. Replace the BICU board as a last resort, if none of the above resolves it

Is It Worth Repairing, or Time to Replace?

The TD sensor itself sits on the drum/development unit (PCDU), so if a connector or gear issue isn't the fix, the unit it's mounted on may need replacing. A genuine Ricoh MP C4504 black drum unit is currently listed at PrecisionRoller, a major parts retailer — check the current price there for a real sense of what you're looking at before adding a technician's labor, typically around $350 per hour once diagnostic time is included. On a color machine, you may have four of these units (one per color), so if more than one is showing problems, costs add up quickly compared to a low-meter replacement copier.

This isn't a simple toner-swap fix — it usually means opening up the development unit, which most office staff haven't done before. If you're seeing either of these codes, give us a call and we can help you figure out whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense.

Not sure which way to go? Text us a photo of your error screen and tell us your model — we'll give you an honest read on whether it's worth fixing, no obligation. And if it makes more sense to replace it, we carry low-meter, fully tested copiers at wholesale liquidation pricing with free delivery and installation throughout Southern California, often available the same week.
