Getting SC681 error codes on your Ricoh color copier? This is a toner ID chip communication error — something went wrong reading the chip on one of your toner bottles. Ricoh's official service manual states the color rule plainly, so here it is exactly as documented:
The Color Rule
Look at the last digit of the SC681 branch number:
So SC681-01, SC681-06, SC681-11, SC681-16, and so on all point to the black toner bottle. SC681-03, SC681-08, SC681-13, SC681-18, and so on all point to cyan. Note that branch numbers ending in 0 or 5 don't appear in this code at all — they're simply not used.
What the Rest of the Number Tells You (the Error Subtype)
Combine the two: SC681-22, for example, is a communication timeout (21–24 range) on the magenta toner bottle (last digit 2). Across nearly every subtype, the underlying cause is the same handful of things: noise interference, a bad connection, corrupted ID data, or in some cases an actual malfunction.
How to Fix It
The good news on this one: most SC681 cases are a free fix — a clean and reseat handles it the majority of the time, no parts needed.
If the error keeps coming back on the same color after trying the above, the toner bottle detection board, the harness to it, or the BiCU board itself may need inspection by a technician. That's a less common outcome for this particular code, but if you've genuinely tried the steps above more than once and it's still happening, feel free to call or text us a photo of the error screen and we'll help you figure out what's actually going on.
